Fresh Air Fest 2021

A major thank you to everyone at Third Angle New Music, and especially Lisa Volle, Sarah Tiedemann, and Kit Gillem for their support in commissioning A Cold Stability for solo percussion with electronics! It was a surreal experience to be back on stage again, and to share the afternoon with so many amazing musicians made for a very special event after so many months without live performances. The program included:

A Cold Stability for percussion with electronics by Christopher Whyte
21 by Andy Akiho
Memory Palace by Christopher Cerrone

What a pleasure it was to perform these works for such an appreciative audience. A special thank you to Valdine Mishkin for being such a wonderful duo partner!

GAIDA Festival of Contemporary Music

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, it was truly special to travel to Vilnius, Lithuania to perform at the 30th anniversary of the GAIDA Festival of Contemporary Music this fall. Both our Portland Percussion Group concert, and our collaboration with Colin Currie Quartet and some very fine Lithuanian musicians to give the Lithuanian premiere of Steve Reich’s Drumming were memorable, to say the least! Especially in a year when so many concerts have been cancelled or moved online, having the chance to perform for such an enthusiastic live audience in this beautiful city was so wonderful.

A special thank you to the GAIDA organizers and to the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation for their support of our trip to Lithuania!

New Music Gathering

What an honor it was to be featured in two programs at this year’s virtual New Music Gathering – leading the PSU Percussion Ensemble in a performance of Frederic Rzewski’s “Les Moutons de Panurge,” and as a featured soloist performing Kenji Bunch‘s “Triple Jump” for solo marimba!

Virtual Clinic: Approaching Bach on Marimba

A hearty thank you to my good friend Dr. Mark Ramirez at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley for the invitation to present a virtual masterclass on Bach performance practice for marimba this week!

nienteForte Festival

A huge thank you to Mendel Lee and Stephen Montalvo for inviting us to perform at the nienteForte Contemporary Music Festival in New Orleans! We had a blast performing our recent Call-for-Scores winners, and giving the world premiere of two new fantastic works for percussion quartet!

OMEA Convention 2020

Thanks to everyone who attended our session with the PSU Percussion Studio at the 2020 Oregon Music Education Association Annual Conference on incorporating chamber music into the public school percussion curriculum! We enjoyed sharing some important concepts on percussion education and pedagogy!

Third Angle Wine Wednesdays

Thanks to everyone who came out for Wine Wednesdays at Pullman Wine Bar, and a big thanks to Third Angle New Music for programming this awesome new concert series!

VMEA Day of Percussion

Big thanks to Ian Flint for organizing the inaugural VMEA Day of Percussion! It was a blast to spend the day with these bright young percussionists and to be back in Vermont after so many years. Thanks to Yamaha Music USA, Zildjian, and Vic Firth for supporting the event!

Oregon Symphony Recording

It’s been an unusually packed month of concerts, but spending some time with the always-inspirational Gabriela Lena Frank is a major highlight, and getting to perform and record her Concerto for Orchestra with the Oregon Symphony has been such a treat. Thanks also to Lisa Volle and Third Angle New Music for hosting Gabi to share some sincere insights into her musical mind!

Portland Percussion Group Fixtures

We had a great time working with the winners of our 2019 Call for Scores, including Daniel Webbon, Ben Justis, and Douglas Hertz. Pairing their new pieces with Paul Lansky’s Threads (a PPG favorite) was a very fulfilling experience, and it was great to share this music with our awesome audience! Thanks to everyone who came!
